First, always wear a swimming cap. This prevents chlorine or salt water from getting absorbed by the hair resulting in dry and brittle strands. If you are swimming in non-chlorinated water such as lakes and rivers, you can protect your hair by making big braids. Make sure your hair is clean and without tangles before you braid it or put in under a swimming cap.

After you swim wash your hair immediately with a good shampoo and conditioner and towel dry it. Comb it from the tips to the roots and take out any tangles.
